The South Asian nation or island of Sri Lanka is time and again viewed as a plural society because it is composed of groups of solidarity living closely though remaining clearly divided through religion, language as well as sense of distinctive historical experiences. Nevertheless, since the start of political rivalry in the mid-1940s between Sri Lanka Tamil society and majority Sinhalese community, tensions between the two has escalated over the years (White, 2010). The origin of Tamil separatism can be traced back to the period immediately following World War II when S. Chelvanayagam stated that Tamil people had the right to secede plus federate with a sovereign South India. During this time, a secessionist faction was emerging in South India giving rise to DMK party. The party?s leader (Professor Appadurai) wrote about its aims plus objectives by claiming that Ceylon (Sri Lanka) was already semi-Tamil. In addition, he claimed that once the place was under their rule the envisioned Tamil Free State would represent the best Tamil Harbor globally. Altogether, these moves and or claims by Sri Lanka?s plus South India?s Tamil leaders during the time of independence are significant because they were precursors towards secessionist movements of Tamil Regions to form a Tamil Empire. The ideology commonly associated with this long-term separatist group involves recognition of the Tamils as a nation in Sri Lanka. The movement sought to establish a distinct Tamil nation plus absolute secession from Sri Lanka. The Tamil people wanted to establish a nation of their own in a place they would refer to as their homeland. Altogether, the movement?s goal has been to establish a Tamil homeland.
The Tamil separatist movement has been known for its violent attacks in the past. This includes the terrorist activities by Tamil youths in 1970s leading to assassinations of Tamil collaborators as well as police officials. Worth noting is that such activities contributed to further attacks by the separatists as the government sought to suppress the Tamil people. For instance, the 1977 anti-Tamil protests by government forces were quite brutal and resulted in violent attacks by members of the separatist movement. In 1983, the separatist movement launched attacks on government personnel killing up to 13 soldiers.
