Question 1

Describe three public art works that are designed to enhance the experience of the Calgary C-Train and assess the effectiveness of each.

The C-train is rated as one of the most efficient systems of transport that operates within the Canadian city of Calgary. This mode of transit has been in existence for more than three decades and its effectiveness has been attributed to thoroughness and precision. Artwork plays a pivotal role in enhancing the experience of the C-train and even its performance (Carlyle, 2013). Art & Architecture of Calgary Sample Essay

To begin with, the C-train is designed in such a matter that the element of space is given a lot of importance and made to beautify this object of transport. The pathways inside the train are spacious and expansive such that they allow movement of commuters in an orderly manner when compared to the normal trains (Wolinsky, 2013). Moreover, the oval-like design of these passenger aisles allows for a projected view of the train from either a sitting or standing angle.        Secondly, the paintings and works of art that are displayed on the walls of the train play an integral role when it comes to enhancing the experience of the commuters. This is because the passengers are able to enjoy the view of this artwork that tends to fuse modern concepts with the conventional culture of Calgary. Further, the same artistic concept is incorporated in the design of the C-train. A closer look reveals that the design of the seats in the different classes shows that it is meant to provide maximum comfort to the travelers. The seats are made out of cost-effective material that is well tucked into the rails and bars of metal (Suchet, 2015). Art & Architecture of Calgary Sample Essay

The comfort and luxury that is accorded to these seats has even seen the C-train register a high number of travelers since the percentage of visitors and tourists has also increased in the same proportion. This artwork also extends to the exterior side of the train where the color scheme of the C-train has been changed such that a red and grey pattern has been adopted to enhance the appearance of the train (Grant, 2015). It has been shown that appearance and outlook plays a critical role in determining whether customers or clients will be receptive to a product or service. In this case, the beauty of the trains from the external view makes them appeal to commuters and this in turn increases the sale of tickets.

The inclusion of well-crafted and strategically placed two-dimensional carvings and structures has also contributed to increasing the efficiency of the C-train in a significant manner (Suchet, 2015). This is because not only do these artworks serve as demarcations of the station itself, it helps it to stand out and help the travelers to enjoy the view as they wait to board the next train. The third public artwork that is included in giving the C-train improved functionality is the sleek design of its windows and even its doors. Art & Architecture of Calgary Sample Essay

The train has fused modern art to come up with windows that are thick enough to offer protection from natural and unforeseen hazards while at the same allowing the travelers to enjoy the scenic view from the comfort of their seats (Suchet, 2015). The Calgary C-train is held with a lot of esteem and this can be explained by the fact that artwork plays a very fundamental and essential role in its functioning and operation. This has been evidenced from the manner in which the train is designed to how art is fused in the making of the seats, alleys and even the windows themselves. It is also essential to note that these trains occasionally host galleries while on transit and this allows both visitors and the native citizens of Calgary or even Canada to appreciate skill and aptitude.

The city of Calgary has been celebrated for its ability to maintain and uphold art and architecture in all public spheres including transportation. The popularity of the C-train in Calgary continues to grow and this can be attributed to the breathtaking works of art that have been fused in its creation.

Question 2

Describe three examples of Calgary architecture that you believe are designed to disrupt the expectations of the user / visitor. Be sure to specifically describe and explain the aspects that you believe are disruptive.

Calgary is indisputably one of the cities in Canada that is home to breath taking pieces of art that are crafted with sophisticated skill and precision. The idea of public art and architecture plays a fundamental role in giving this town its unique sense of identity as well as belonging. The peace bridge that is located within Calgary can be described as one of the most magnificent architectural creations that stands out in the town (Saumur et al, 2016). This bridge has been built through the process of infusing modern designs and concepts so as to come up with an outstanding product. Further, the peace bridge has become synonymous with Calgary such that tourists travel from far distances to behold this creation. Art & Architecture of Calgary Sample Essay

Additionally, a majority of people who reside in Calgary tend to use the route that will make them pass through this bridge because they appreciate the design, color and even assembly techniques that were involved in its construction (Tromposch, 2014). This demonstrates that the people of this Canadian city understand that public art and architecture are two vital elements that define a community. The wonderland sculpture is the second architectural element that was obviously created to disrupt the expectations of the visitors and native citizens of Calgary. This is because the design assumes the shape of a young girl and the twelve-meter structure is closely fused near the entrance of the bow building.

This makes it almost impossible to ignore it, as it is the first thing that strikes the eye when a person is entering the building (Bowers, 2012). What?s more, the fascination of this architectural piece comes in from the fact that the wonderland sculpture has a place where people can enter the bow building through its neck. This allows even the visitors to marvel at the beauty of this structure as they walk in and out of the plaza. The concept of this creation is borrowed from the desire to come up with a masterpiece that could disrupt the attention of the visitors for all the right reasons. The third example of unique and disruptive architectural work in Calgary is the core shopping center that is located on the downtown area of the city (Ramsay, 2013).

This building assumes a dome shape at the entrance that is illuminated with natural sunlight to allow the shoppers to enjoy a one-time experience while making their purchases. In fact, there are more than three hundred thousand visitors that pass through the core building to behold its beauty as well as its appearance. It is evident that Calgary is one of the few Canadian towns that accord a lot of importance to both art and architecture as evidenced by its unique and breathtaking constructions.
