The Sherriff implies that the women are just similar to the cutlery and dishes such that their presence in the crime scene cannot help with solving of the case. They compare the women to the everyday spoons, plates and utensils alongside any other thing that they can find in the house. This behavior suddenly changed and disappeared once she got married and she was reduced to the level of a prisoner. Her work was to stay at home and take care of her husband and all his requirements.
